It’s been nearly a year since we were introduced to Gimmy Flowens — the bold new solo venture from The Oogars vocalist, Gemma Owens. While her debut single ‘Away For A While’ led us to expect more enchanting folk songs, Gimmy’s new single ‘Don’t Be Afraid’ shows us a vibrant new sound and look from the Northern Rivers-based artist.

Gimmy Flowens’ second single hits us with a fresh garage rock energy and a strong pulse, but don’t expect your typical rock tune as Gimmy’s unique vocal melody, dynamic range and storytelling is what really hooks you in. The track is about the intimate inner dialogue of our minds, experiencing feelings of self doubt and self empowerment in different aspects of life.

For Gemma Owens, making music and art are both important creative outlets — “my music is a more vulnerable expression of myself, whereas my paintings are quite humorous and childlike, which brings out my playful side.” This new incarnation of Gimmy Flowens sees Gemma bringing her music and visual art closer together.

With just two singles now under her belt, it’s still hard to stick Gimmy Flowens into a particular box but one thing is becoming clear; her years performing with garage rockers The Oogars and her outsider approach to songwriting is leading Gimmy into exciting territory similar to Aldous Harding, Angel Olsen and Julia Jacklin.

Recorded with Anthony Vallone (producer/engineer) at Wave Forms Studios, ‘Don’t Be Afraid’ is out on October 7th and will be followed by two more singles as part of the forthcoming debut EP from Gimmy Flowens.
